This Wednesday (May 16th), during Bible Study/Prayer Meeting, we examined Ephesians 1:3-14. Those familiar with the text (please read it if you are not familiar with it) should recognize that there are some major theological points to be found in this passage. Probably not the least of which is the issue of predestination. But there is much more to be discovered.

To start at the beginning of the passage, a couple issues to be noted just in verse 3. First, we see what God did for us – he blessed us in Christ. Note that this is not a promise of a blessing to occur in the future – it has already occurred. And a careful reading reveals that this blessing has taken place in this world that we live in now. While we wait for the day we join back together with God in heaven, we need to remain mindful that we have already been blessed in the here and now. Sometimes it may not seem like it. But we are told to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thess. 5:18).

We also see that we are not the ones who “work” for our salvation. God is the one who initiated our salvation. Let us not get hung up on the words “he predestined us” thinking it refers to each of us specifically and individually (though it may). Our study group leaned toward the use of “us” meaning all of humanity – that is, God knew/knows that one day humanity will return to fellowship with him. But individuals still have the free will to reject the saving grace extended to us.

We also see in this passage that we are redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ. Along with the redemptive power of his sacrifice on the cross, we are also forgiven for our sins. We do need to be careful that we use this forgiveness for God’s glory (it is his purpose).

Finally, we had a discussion about what “the gospel” means or what kinds of ideas it evokes. While many may be tempted to think of it as being a message of hope for the world, or the news about what God through the sacrifice of his only son (and these concepts are not incorrect), we did note that in this passage it is revealed that the gospel is also about “your salvation.” Not only general salvation for all of humanity, but also the personal, individual salvation each of us needs. The good news is not only that God sent his only son to save the world, but that he did so for your salvation. Yes, YOU.

Greeting

Announcements

Prelude, “Come, Thou Fount”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Church of Jesus Christ, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn, “Break Thou the Bread of Life,” Mary A. Lathbury

Break Thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me,
As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord;
My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word!

Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me,
As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;
Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall;
And I shall find my peace, my all in all.

Teach me to live, dear Lord,
As thy disciples lived in Galilee.
Then, all my struggles o’er, then victory won,
I shall behold thee, Lord, the Living One.

Pastoral Prayer

“The Lord’s Prayer,” solo by Miriam Vines

Offering & Offertory, “A Shield About Me”

Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “How Firm a Foundation,” John Rippon

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

Even down to old age all My people shall prove
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne.

The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

Greeting & Announcements

Prelude, “Come, Now is the Time to Worship”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

Hymn, “Open My Eyes,” Clara Scott

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my mouth, and let me bear,
Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Pastoral Prayer

Our Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “He Brought Me Out,” Henry Zelley

My heart was distressed ’neath Jehovah’s dread frown,
And low in the pit where my sins dragged me down;
I cried to the Lord from the deep miry clay,
Who tenderly brought me out to golden day.

He brought me out of the miry clay,
He set my feet on the Rock to stay;
He puts a song in my soul today,
A song of praise, hallelujah!

He placed me upon the strong Rock by His side,
My steps were established and here I’ll abide;
No danger of falling while here I remain,
But stand by His grace until the crown I gain.

He brought me out of the miry clay,
He set my feet on the Rock to stay;
He puts a song in my soul today,
A song of praise, hallelujah!

He gave me a song, ’twas a new song of praise;
By day and by night its sweet notes I will raise;
My heart’s overflowing, I’m happy and free.
I’ll praise my Redeemer, who has rescued me.

He brought me out of the miry clay,
He set my feet on the Rock to stay;
He puts a song in my soul today,
A song of praise, hallelujah!

I’ll sing of His wonderful mercy to me,
I’ll praise Him till all men His goodness shall see;
I’ll sing of salvation at home and abroad,
Till many shall hear the truth and trust in God.

He brought me out of the miry clay,
He set my feet on the Rock to stay;
He puts a song in my soul today,
A song of praise, hallelujah!

Hymn, “Christ Arose” by Robert Lowry

Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Death cannot keep its Prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Lo! the Sun’s eclipse is over, Alleluia!
Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia!

Greeting & Announcements

Prelude, “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

Amen.

Hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” by Reginald Heber

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and Seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see:
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea;
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Pastoral Prayer & Our Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Offering & Offertory, “The Wonderful Cross”

Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” by Edward Perronet

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed from the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.

The Lesson, Mark 11:1-11

The Message, “Your King is Coming”

Benediction, Hold fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
Greeting & Announcements

Prelude, “The Power of the Cross”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

Hymn, “At the Cross,” by Isaac Watts

Alas! and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Well might the sun in darkness hide
And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died,
For man the creature’s sin.

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give my self away
’Tis all that I can do.

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Pastoral Prayer & Our Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “God Will Take Care of You,” Civilla D. Martin

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.

God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.

God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.

God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

The Lesson, Acts 16:16-24

The Message, “No Matter What May Be the Test”

Benediction, The LORD will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. (Psalm 121:7-8)

Back by popular demand, Graham Friends Church is once again stewing!!! In a little break with tradition, we are going to hold a springtime stew on April 14th. To make this a success, we do need a couple things:

1. Helpers – we really need some Quaker Men to plan to come out on Saturday, April 14th, to help with the stewing. There are lots of jobs to do – stirring, opening cans, moving ingredients around, putting the stew in “jars”, and providing encouragement to those who are stirring. It can be tiring work. It can also be very rewarding work. If you can help out, please let Jeff Causey know. We need folks as early as 5:30 am and we usually wrap up in the early afternoon. You don’t have to stay for the whole thing, but a good solid two-hour shift is always appreciated.

2. Orders – we need stew orders! Below is a copy of the order form that you can print out and return to Graham Friends Church. Forms are also available at the church. Just fill them out and send along your payment to Jeff Causey (and if you can’t find him directly, give it to one on the Quaker Men and it will find its way to the right place). Please note – pre-orders must be submitted by April 8th! We will order ingredients based on the pre-orders. There is no guarantee that stew will be available for same-day sales (this happened to us in the Fall).

The Apostles Creed

Hymn, “Oh, for a Thousand Tongues,” Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

Pastoral Prayer & Our Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “Open My Eyes,” Clara Scott

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my mouth, and let me bear,
Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

The Word of God, Sermon (“The Hearing Ear”) based on Acts 16:11-15 (The Unauthorized Version)

11 And setting sail to Troas, we sailed straight to Samothrace, and the next day onto Neopolis. 12 and from there to Philippi, which is the most important city of Macedonia, a Roman colony, and we stayed in this city some days. 13 And on the day of the Sabbath, we went outside the gate alongside the river where we thought there was a prayer meeting, and we sat down and spoke with the women who had gathered. one woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, was worshiping God, listening. The Lord opened her heart to what was being said by Paul. 14 And one woman worshiping God, named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to what was being said by Paul. 15 And when she and her household had been baptized, she invited us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house to stay.” And she persuaded us.

Benediction, Revelation 2:7

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches: “To the one who conquers, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”

Announcements & Call to Worship

Prelude, “Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

Amen.

Hymn, “I Know Whom I Have Believed,” Daniel Whittle

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

But I know Whom I have believèd,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

I know not how this saving faith
To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
Wrought peace within my heart.

But I know Whom I have believèd,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

I know not how the Spirit moves,
Convincing us of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
Creating faith in Him.

But I know Whom I have believèd,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

I know not what of good or ill
May be reserved for me,
Of weary ways or golden days,
Before His face I see.

But I know Whom I have believèd,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

I know not when my Lord may come,
At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
Or meet Him in the air.

But I know Whom I have believèd,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

Pastoral Prayer & Our Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
Children’s Chat

The Greeting of Friends

Hymn, “Send the Light,” Charles Gabriel

There’s a call comes ringing over the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue there are souls to save,
Send the light! Send the light!

Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

We have heard the Macedonian call today,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a golden offering at the cross we lay,
Send the light! Send the light!

Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

Let us pray that grace may everywhere abound,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a Christlike spirit everywhere be found,
Send the light! Send the light!

Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
Let us gather jewels for a crown above,
Send the light! Send the light!

Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessèd Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

The Word of God, Sermon (“Collective Calling”) based on Acts 16:6-10 (The Unauthorized Version)

6 And they went through the region of Phyrigia and Galatia, having been hindered by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
7 And when they had come to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
8 So passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.
9 And a vision was seen by Paul during the night: a man from Macedonia was standing and urging him and saying, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us.”
10 And when he had seen the vision, we immediately attempted to depart into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to announce the good news to them.

Benediction, 2 Corinthians 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
